Canada’s TD Bank’s marketing campaign of turning its ATMs into ‘Automated Thanking Machines’ that distributed gifts to customers, proved to be a viral hit, racking up more than two million YouTube views in less than a week.
In branches across Canada last week, ATMs did not just spit out cash, they also began speaking to customers, thanking them for banking with TD and dispensing personalized gifts.
The lowly ATM has evolved beyond its humble roots to be considered an important part of popular culture (and Banking), spawning variants beyond traditional banking deposits and withdrawals. Such lighthearted examples as automated thanking machines, or other uses, such as for prepaid cards, transit tickets or cupcake dispensers, go to show just how far ATMs (in whatever form) have come.
