Mobile-payments startup LevelUp has introduced new hardware that is compatible with both QR codes and Near Field Communication. LevelUp will provide the new “docks’ to merchants for free.

LevelUp believes these the docks will help prepare its system for the future.

From GigaOm:

“Do I think NFC will be consumer hit in six months? Definitely not. But in three to five years? Absolutely,” [LevelUp’s Chief Ninja Seth Priebatsch] said. “But whether we prefer QR code or NFC, I just want users to use what they use.”

This announcement follows LevelUp’s recent decision to eliminate interchange fees, and charge merchants only when a consumer redeems rewards credits. LevelUp added 800 new merchants this past August alone.
