Information is coming out about another data breach at Heartland Payment Systems.
Heartland Payment Systems suffered a data breach on May 8th that affected their payroll customers. This is unfortunate news when you take into account that they analysts were of a mind that the company would be posting a $0.64 earnings per share. The payroll processing company also has product offerings in loyalty cards, mobile payments and payment processing.
This is a breach of a slightly different color for two reasons. One, Heartland due to their history, has dealt with data breaches on a grand scale and coming out of that experience, has spent significant resources to lead the industry data security. Two, the data that is believed to be compromised here was not typical card data but information from Heartland’s payroll business. It’s a (painful) reminder that as we look to secure data for card transactions through techniques such as EMV, multiform authentication, and tokenization to mention just a few, we can broaden our thoughts to include how these techniques can be used to secure ACH transactions, account numbers and other payments related data.
