A recent article published in Payments Journal on October 5th discusses recent developments in Scan and Go technology, designed to improve the shopping and checkout experience for consumers, and suggesting that it is poised to become retail’s next disruptive technology.

“But now there’s a new generation of Scan and Go technology. One that replaces the handheld scanner with a simple app on consumers’ smartphones. In the more sophisticated mobile app versions of Scan and Go, shoppers scan items with their smartphones and then easily pay for their shopping in-app, removing the need to wait in line altogether. Growing numbers of consumers are willing to embrace technological innovations, and retailers are eager to find ways to improve buying experiences. ”

Mercator Advisory Group’s CustomerMonitor Survey Series latest Payment survey conducted online in June 2017 by a panel of 3,000 U.S. adults shows that consumers are looking toward mobile device to support their shopping experiences. In fact, most smartphone owners use their mobile phones to shop for goods and services and 9 in 10 of them do so while shopping in stores including 1 in 4 who claim to have used this “scan and go” technology by using a mobile app to scan items in a store and purchase them without using the checkout terminal. While this figure seems surprisingly high given the limited implementation of this technology at the time of the survey, it does point to consumers’ high interest in the concept.
