Shopkick, a mobile merchandisingand loyalty program that’s been a poorly kept secret, is about to launch insome top brand name stores. While not a payments application, it takesthe consumer right up to the edge of payments and, as such, it merits theattention of the payments industry.
Shopkick, a San Francisco-based startup, launchesits flagship iPhone app today, and it’s right at the interesting junction of mobileapps, location-based services, and commerce. Someone is going to make moneyhere someday, and Shopkick is one of the most ambitious, interesting attemptswe’ve seen.
The idea is that when you walk into a store thatShopkick partners with, you start to earn rewards — “Kickbucks” –just for walking in. (There’s actually a device in the store that connects toyour phone.) Its early partners include nationwide chains like Best Buy,American Eagle Outfitters, Macy’s, and the Sports Authority, as well asshopping-mall outfit Simon Property Group.
