Handset maker Ericsson has concentrated its efforts in developing markets where its low cost, high volume handsets are particularly welcome. To improve its margins in that highly competitive end of the market, the handset maker – like other hardware makers in the payments business (VeriFone)- is diversifying into payments. Ericsson is positioning its solution to compete in the SMS-based mobile money services world. It’s entering a crowded space in many markets. India, for example, has a dozen mobile money services. But its new effort may jumpstart its mobile network operator customers into this line of business and, as its capabilities expand, the Ericsson platform could replace the home grown or prior generation offerings of vendors like SMART.
